​Defense Health Agency injury epidemiologists and other public health experts routinely and systematically analyze the rates and types of Active-Duty Service members' injuries through the monitoring of injuries​ documented in their electronic medical records (EHRs). This is referred to as injury surveillance.​

Injury surveillance identifies leading types of injuries, causes, and risk factors in military populations and sets the basis for focused investigations, evidence-based recommendations, and best practice guidance. 

Consistent assessment of military population injuries serves as the basis for numerous Military Injury Prevention products.
