January 16 – January 20: Expect calm conditions for the rest of the week and into the weekend. As the low-pressure system off the Southern California coast migrates over the Four Corners, we will see a break from offshore winds which are responsible for the dry conditions seen across the state. This shift to an onshore wind pattern will result in the cessation of the dry inland air we have been seeing and allow a more prevalent marine layer at the coast to form. For the time being, as calm conditions persist, overnight AQIs in the District’s smoke sensitive areas (SLV and Carmel Valley) may reach UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS (USG). Despite increased fire danger, when a strong offshore breeze (beginning early next week) is present, it does provide an opportunity to ventilate out any overnight accumulation of PM2.5 (smoke). Coastal temperatures will range from the mid-30’s to low-60’s, and inland temperatures from the low-30’s to mid-60’s. Cool temperatures will keep afternoon ozone levels below State standards and thus air quality for ozone will be GOOD. AQIs for PM10 (dust) will be GOOD as well.
