Description
The course details the provisions governing the transport of infectious substances, select agents, biological products, diagnostic specimens and their wastes.  The course focuses on the regulatory requirements as prescribed by the Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Defense (DoD), International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, United States Postal Service Domestic Mail Manual, Centers for Disease Control Regulations, World Health Organization guidelines and other regulatory requirements.  Students discuss the specific packaging requirements for biological products in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) standards.  Discussions focus on permitting, importing, and exporting samples and specimens. A certification test is administered at the end of the course.  Students must earn 80% or better to earn their certification.  Instructors use group discussions and practical exercises to reinforce learning.  Workshop participants are encouraged to share their experiences and knowledge with the group.
