Army Policy

Preventive Medicine: This revision, dated 25 May 2007, redefines preventive medicine and preventive
medicine services and:

  • Implements DoDI 6055.1 policy and procedures for ergonomics.
  • Requires the addition of programs and services for ergonomics.

Army Guidance

 DA PAM 40-21 External Link
Ergonomics Program: This revision, dated 30 august 2018:

  • Outlines the goals and requirements of an installation ergonomics program and addresses organizational involvement in preventing illnesses and injuries by eliminating or reducing occupational risk factors.
  • Discusses development of an ergonomics plan that focuses on the identification and control of improper workplace and work process design.
  • This updates the 2003 version of the DA-PAM 40-21.  Major revisions include updates to guidance on risk factor identification and analysis, addition of non-permissible ergonomic interventions guidance such as ball chairs, updates to training and program review guidance, and a new chapter on the management and oversight of safe patient handling and mobility programs.  This update will assist DA safety and occupational health (SOH) personnel by providing guidance for establishing ergonomic programs as an integral part of the Army SOH program at DA facilities.  Effective ergonomics programs can prevent workplace injuries, reduce the severity and associated costs of work related musculoskeletal disorders, and enhance readiness.
