Day of Departure
- If flying, plan on arriving early to the airport as pet processing can take time.
Check with the airline on procedures for checking in pets.
- Pack your pet's favorite toys in your carry-on to use during the waiting time and once you are reunited and able to monitor your pet. Do NOT put these items in the travel crate as they could choke on them during travel.
- Make sure you have all your mandatory documentation, food, and medications easily accessible and in the owner's possession.
- Identify bathroom break areas for your pet and allow extra time if driving.
Arrival & Beyond
- Once you arrive at your destination, allow your pet time in a safe space, such as their kennel, to adjust to the new environment.
- Use pheromone therapy in their new space to also help them adjust.

Establish Local Care: Schedule an appointment with your local VTF or veterinarian. If planning to live on base/post, ensure your pet meets the Garrison requirements.

In January 2024, the Defense Department authorized the reimbursement of pet relocation expenses for a single household pet (a cat or a dog), such as transportation and quarantine fees, during a PCS move.
- Domestic Moves: Up to $550 for one pet.
- OCONUS Moves: Up to $2,000 for one pet.
Effective November 25, 2024, Service members on a PCS move from one of the high-risk countries (listed in JTR Supplement Locations Authorized to Exceed $2,000 Pet Allowance Limitation
[PDF, 3 pages]) may receive reimbursement up to $4,000 for one dog when both Patriot Express capacity and regularly scheduled commercial airline service are not available for pets. The reimbursement of pet transportation expenses more than $2,000 must be approved through the Secretarial Process.
Only one dog or cat per move is eligible for reimbursement.Army personnel MUST have their pet added to their PCS orders to qualify. Other services may have similar requirements – check with your local Traffic Management Office (TMO).
