Public Health Information Paper (PHIP) 39-01-0514 evaluates microbial health risks associated with wastewater reuse in deployed settings.  The assessment  uses Escherichia coli concentration as a measure of risk from exposure to microbial pathogens that might be found in treated wastewater.  The risk assessment provides background on the need for considering treated wastewater reuse, explains why E. coli was selected to measure microbial risk, and provides details of the risk assessment and associated scientific uncertainties.  Risk-based water concentrations (RBWCs) were developed for E. coli for full-body contact activities (e.g., showering) under various exposure assumptions.  The report provides information and guidance for setting a microbial standard for unrestricted reuse of treated wastewater using currently fielded measurement equipment.  The supplements provide additional detail on interpreting the risk estimates.
