 Vehicle Accident Injuries

Last Updated: February 18, 2025

Each year hundreds of service members are killed or severely injured in crashes involving vehicles.

Most commonly, these accidents involve privately owned vehicles (POVs). POVs include motorcycles as well as cars and trucks, off-road vehicles, and privately owned water vehicles (e.g., boats, jet skis).

Though less frequently, accidents leading to fatality or injury also occur with military tactical or government vehicles.

Primary risks are:

  • Distracted driving (includes texting/phones)
  • Alcohol use
  • Fatigue
  • Failure to wear seatbelts (including in tactical vehicles)
  • Failure to wear helmets (for motorcycles)
